Höhenhof, Holzbach Germany
The Largest Outdoor Labyrinth in Europe
We will take an hour's drive from Wiesbaden, along the Rhine River and into the hills to Höhenhof farm, outside of Holzbach, Germany. To get a sense of the scale, the image to the left is bounded by country roads that can fit two cars passing each other. The white octagon in the center is large enough for there to be a second stone labyrinth in it with benches for picnics. The labyrinth is created by Chinese Bamboo grass, light brown in the winter and verdant green in the summer. The pattern is a 14-layer variation of the now lost Labyrinth from Reims Cathedral in France. The path inward covers 5 kms and takes about an hour and 15 minutes to get to the center.
Details We will rendezvous at the Höhenhof farm, at 11:00 on Saturday 7 May. A map to the farm can be found HERE. The address for GPS units is "Höhenhof 55469 Holzbach". It about an hour's drive west of Wiesbaden just off the Rheinböllen exit of A61. There is an entrance fee of 3 € for adult and 2 € for children. Bring a picnic lunch that you can carry (in backpack?) with you into the labyrinth. When we get to the center, there is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy lunch and companionship… and another labyrinth to walk! (See photo.) For those who need to make a quick getaway, there is an "escape route" that brings you directly to the outside. Please rsvp to [email protected] to let us know that you are coming.
