Gutenberg Museum/Mainz Dom
Gutenberg was born in Mainz and spent his last years there. Gutenberg's printing press transformed society's access to information, supporting the rise of both Reformation within the Church and Humanism outside of it. The Gutenberg Museum is a Mecca for all who love the printed word and books. Here is a wonderful 60 minute BBC documentary hosted by Stephen Fry on "The Machine That Made Us." (Itinerary below.)
Itinerary
We will meet at 10:30 at the entrance to the Gutenberg Museum on Liebfrauenplatz 5 55116 Mainz, across from the Dom. Trains run regularly to the Mainz Hauptbahnhof. The train is a very good option for this outing. Parking is available at Löhrstraße (Hilton) and Am Brand among many other parking garages. Because the market will be in full swing be prepared for some lots to be full. Our itinerary will include:

- Tour of the Mainz Dom, one the 3 great Romanesque cathedrals in the area. The Mainz Saturday Market will be in full swing.
- Tour of the Gutenberg Museum, which includes two (of the existing 49) Gutenberg Bibles on display, a number of manuscripts of the 15th century just before the printing press, a working press in the basement, and a display of the effect the printing press had on civilization in general and religion in particular.
- A walk through the Aldstadt section called Im Kirschgarten (the cherry garden.)
- Lunch will be at 13:30 at the Eisgrub Brau Brewpub on Weissliliangasse 1a, 55116 Mainz. Fresh beer styles made at the pub, along with traditional German fare.
- A walk to the St.Stephen's Church, which has one of the last installations of stained-glass windows of Marc Chagall.
